State troopers in Delaware made two rare arrests recently - two men who each had six prior DUI convictions were arrested for drunk driving within hours of one another.
Jeffrey H. Salevan was arrested near Milton Friday afternoon while taking a friend’s daughter to a baseball game, and Anthony B. McLeish was arrested near Camden a few hours later after a state trooper said he spotted him driving on the wrong side of the road.
Prior drunk driving convictions can substantially increase your punishment in DUI cases, but most states have a “lookback” or “washout” period after which prior convictions can’t be used to increase your punishment.
For example, many states have a 10-year lookback period, meaning that if a decade or more passes between your last DUI arrest and your current case, the later arrest will be treated as a first-time drunk driving case.
